Pride, passion and power

It is the start of a new hockey season, and every hockey player here at Shawano High is looking forward to this exciting beginning.

Junior Kobe Schreiber is a player on the hockey team here at SCHS. He has been playing hockey for thirteen years, making him very experienced in this sport.

Schreiber stated that the reason he continued playing hockey for so long is because, “once you are in it is hard to get out of it because it is very addicting.”

In each sport, every year is going to be completely different from the one before, especially in hockey. This is because older players leave and the new players step up, which offers new skills to the team but also takes away other skills.

In hockey as Schreiber stated, “If you do not play as a team you will not be able to win any of the games.”

He expressed that to be able to play as a team, there needs to be communication. Schreiber explained how communication is something that his team struggles with.

Schreiber indicated that more effort and team building would help the team improve their communication skills.

Junior Mason Dingeldein has also been playing hockey for thirteen years.

Dingeldein revealed that his goal for this season of hockey is, “to teach all the freshman to become better players for the team.”

Dingeldein expressed that the reason he sees himself as a good player on the team is because, “Going out there, I give one hundred percent every time and never give up, and I always try having a positive attitude about everything.”

Scoring goals and making great passes are exciting accomplishments to achieve. Dingeldein explained how he feels about making a goal.

“It’s a big deal. It makes your adrenaline shoot up, and it is not just for yourself, but it is for your whole team. So, it gets the whole team pumped up as well.”

Junior Jocelyn Gagnow also plays on the SCHS hockey team. Gagnow explained how making a goal makes her feel good, excited and successful.

Gagnow has played hockey since she was five. It all started when Gagnow was excelling in figure skating when she was five, so her mother had suggested trying hockey. Gagnow joined the team, and her drive for the sport has stuck ever since.

What Gagnow enjoys most about hockey is “being able to meet new people.” On the other hand, one thing she does not enjoy is “being the only girl on a team with all guys.”

She explained that this is what she stuggles most with in hockey because, “you’re a girl and they will think you do not know what you are doing because a lot of people say it is a guy’s sport.”

Even though Gagnow has her struggles in hockey, she continues to block it out by not letting these little things get to her, showing how strong of  a player she really is.

When these players found pride for the sport, their passion for hockey grew, which is obvious to see from all the power they give out on the ice.
