Dance team looking for members

It’s that time of the year again. Shawano High Dance Team is looking to recruit new members. November 5 and 6 were Clinic days.

Practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the choir room or other available spots in the school.

There are no tryouts in order to be part of the team – everybody is welcome.

For sophomore Morgan Westphal, this will be her second year on the team.

“I dance because it gives me freedom,” Westphal said. “It is kind of an art.”

The team does not follow a specific style. The athletes can perform any kind of dance, from hip hop to slower dances, depending on what they want to do.

Even if there are only a few people, the students are really kind and supportive.

“We really have fun learning dances together and helping each other learn,” Westphal commented.

Last year’s assistant coach, Jenna Brooks, is going to be the head coach this year.

“She is really nice,” Westphal added. “She is very willing to help us.”

The dance team does not have a competitive schedule. The students perform during home basketball games to support the team.

All the athletes contribute to the team, and every person is good at something in particular.

However, anyone can join the team. Experience is not required.

“You can join if you are willing to dance,” Westphal said. “It does not matter how good you are. We can always help you to get better.”

A successful dancer should always be looking to get better and improve skills, but should also work to help improve their team members as well.

At the moment there are no guys on the team, but they could be an important asset for this season.

“Everybody can be good at whatever they want,” Westphal stated. “Guys can enjoy dance as much as girls, and they can be as good as girls.”

The team is looking for new passionate students ready to start a successful and fun season.

“Dance is free, enjoyable and relaxing,” Westphal concluded.
